Pakistan Inflation Climbs to 7% in February

Headline inflation in Pakistan accelerated to 7% year-on-year in February 2026, according to figures issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The latest reading falls within the 6–7% range previously projected by the Ministry of Finance.

This marks an increase from January 2026’s 5.8% and a significant rise compared to 1.5% recorded in February 2025. On a month-on-month basis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) edged up by 0.3% in February, slightly lower than January’s 0.4% increase and contrasting with the 0.8% decline observed in February last year.

For the first eight months of FY26, average inflation stands at 5.46%, marginally below the 5.85% recorded during the corresponding period of FY25, indicating relative price stability over the fiscal year despite recent upward pressure.

Urban inflation reached 6.8% year-on-year in February, up from 5.8% in January and substantially higher than 1.8% in February 2025. On a monthly basis, urban CPI increased by 0.3%, compared to 0.2% in January and a 0.7% decrease a year earlier.

In rural areas, inflation rose more sharply to 7.3% year-on-year, compared with 5.8% in January and 1.1% in February 2025. Month-on-month rural CPI also climbed by 0.3%, following a 0.6% increase in January and a 1.1% decline in February last year.

In its February 2026 Monthly Economic Update and Outlook, the Finance Division had anticipated inflation to remain within the 6–7% corridor.

From a tax and regulatory perspective, sustained inflationary movement at this level may influence fiscal planning, revenue targets, compliance costs, and future taxation measures—making careful financial and legal structuring increasingly critical for businesses and high-net-worth individuals.
