FBR Extends August Tax Return Filing Deadline To September 25

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing sales tax and federal excise returns for the August 2026 tax period until September 25.

According to an FBR directive issued on September 18, the extension is available to all taxpayers, provided that their due sales tax liability was deposited within the original prescribed deadline.

The FBR exercised its powers under Section 74 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, and Section 43 of the Federal Excise Act, 2005, to grant the extension.

The directive was issued to Chief Commissioners Inland Revenue working at Large Taxpayers Offices, Corporate Tax Offices and Regional Tax Offices.

Under the revised arrangement, taxpayers have additional time to submit their August sales tax and federal excise returns. However, the relief is conditional, as the applicable sales tax liability must already have been paid by the original due date.

The extension therefore applies specifically to the filing of the returns and does not provide additional time for payment of the sales tax liability.
