LPG Prices Rise 8%, Household Cylinder Hits Rs3,296

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has increased liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices by 8% for October, raising the cost of a standard household cylinder by approximately Rs244 as consumers face another increase in cooking fuel expenses.

Under OGRA’s latest notification, the regulated consumer price of LPG has been fixed at Rs279.34 per kilogram from Thursday, compared with Rs258.65 per kilogram in September.

As a result, the price of an 11.8kg domestic cylinder will climb from Rs3,052.10 to Rs3,296.23, adding roughly Rs244 to the amount households pay for each cylinder.

The rate for a 45.4kg commercial cylinder will also increase by Rs939, reaching Rs12,682 and raising operating expenses for businesses that depend on LPG for cooking, heating and other purposes.

The October hike marks the third consecutive monthly increase. OGRA previously raised LPG prices by 5.34% in August, adding Rs152 to the cost of a household cylinder, followed by a further 1.7% increase in September.

These increases came after LPG prices were sharply reduced in July, when OGRA lowered them by 21.8%, bringing down the price of a household cylinder by nearly Rs795.

The July reduction followed a 25.62% decline in Saudi Aramco’s contract price, a major benchmark for LPG imported into Pakistan, along with a moderate appreciation of the Pakistani rupee.

The latest increase is expected to put additional pressure on households and consumers in regions without piped natural gas, where LPG serves as an important alternative for cooking.

Taxes and other government-imposed charges make up a substantial share of the regulated LPG price. OGRA’s pricing framework includes a petroleum levy of Rs4,669 per tonne and GST amounting to Rs36,311 per tonne.

A further 18% GST of Rs6,300 is charged on marketing, distribution and transportation margins, taking the overall margin-related charges to approximately Rs35,000 per tonne.
