FBR Extends Tax Return Deadline To October 15

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Wednesday extended the deadline for submitting income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 to October 15, reversing its position just hours earlier when the tax authority had stated that no additional extension would be granted.

In Circular No. 3 of 2026-27, posted on the FBR’s official X account, the tax authority said taxpayers originally required to submit their returns by September 30 would now have an additional 15 days, until October 15, 2026, to complete the filing process.

The FBR said the extension was approved after receiving requests from various trade organisations and tax bar associations seeking additional time for taxpayers.

The authority exercised its powers under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, to approve the revised filing deadline.

Earlier the same day, the FBR had categorically ruled out any further extension and reiterated that taxpayers were expected to meet the September 30 deadline for submitting their income tax returns.

The subsequent circular effectively overturned that decision, providing taxpayers with another 15 days to file their returns for Tax Year 2026.
