ISLAMABAD: Consumers are set to receive temporary relief on November 3 as the government reduces high-speed diesel (HSD) prices by Rs7.76 per litre and petrol prices by Rs3.40 under its daily petroleum pricing mechanism.

According to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the ex-depot price of high-speed diesel has been lowered from Rs402.96 to Rs395.20 per litre. Meanwhile, the price of motor spirit (petrol) has declined from Rs377.91 to Rs374.51 per litre.

The revised rates will remain applicable on November 3, 2026, with the next price determination scheduled for November 4 under the government's daily pricing mechanism.

Although the reductions provide some immediate relief, their limited duration leaves consumers uncertain about future fuel expenses amid persistent inflation and rising household costs.

The Rs7.76 per litre reduction in diesel prices is particularly relevant for the transport, agriculture and goods transportation sectors, where fuel represents a significant operating expense. Diesel is widely used by trucks, buses, tractors, tube wells and other agricultural machinery, directly influencing transportation and food production costs.

Petrol consumers, especially motorcyclists and small-car owners, will also benefit from the Rs3.40 per litre cut. The reduction is expected to slightly ease commuting expenses for households already managing rising costs of fuel, electricity, food and education.

Daily pricing keeps consumers uncertain

However, the temporary nature of the relief highlights the uncertainty created by the daily petroleum pricing system. With another price review scheduled for November 4, consumers and businesses have no guarantee that the lower rates will continue.

Frequent changes in petroleum prices also make financial planning difficult for transport operators, farmers, small businesses and ordinary motorists, particularly those with limited capacity to manage sudden increases in operating costs.

At the broader economic level, sustained reductions in diesel prices could help lower transportation and agricultural input expenses, potentially easing some inflationary pressures. However, a single-day price reduction is unlikely to make a significant difference to the overall cost of living.
