The federal government has decided to maintain the existing prices of motor spirit (petrol) and high-speed diesel (HSD) for the forthcoming fortnightly review period, as announced on Thursday by the Petroleum Division.
Effective January 16, 2026, petrol will remain fixed at Rs253.17 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs257.08 per litre, with no upward or downward adjustment proposed for the next two weeks.
This decision to hold prices steady follows a notable reduction implemented earlier in January 2026, when the government lowered petrol by Rs10.28 per litre and HSD by Rs8.57 per litre. That earlier cut was positioned as a consumer relief measure coinciding with the New Year period and aimed at alleviating household and transport-related expenditure pressures amid ongoing economic stabilisation efforts.
The Petroleum Division’s press release confirms that the current pricing reflects a balanced assessment of international petroleum product prices, applicable freight and other incidentals, and domestic fiscal considerations, without necessitating any revision at this stage.
The continuation of unchanged rates provides short-term predictability for consumers, transporters, and industrial users reliant on petroleum products, while the government retains flexibility for future fortnightly reviews based on global oil market movements and exchange rate dynamics.
