In an era marked by rapidly evolving trade patterns, technological advancements, and increasingly sophisticated transnational crime, the role of Customs administrations has expanded far beyond revenue collection. In line with the World Customs Organization (WCO) theme “Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment,” Pakistan Customs continues to serve as a critical frontline institution safeguarding society, the economy, and national security.
Customs vigilance is essential to counter a broad spectrum of threats, including smuggling, narcotics trafficking, proliferation of counterfeit goods, intellectual property rights infringements, illegal wildlife trade, and movement of hazardous and prohibited items. Through risk-based targeting, intelligence-led enforcement, and effective post-clearance controls, Pakistan Customs ensures that legitimate trade is facilitated while illicit activities are decisively intercepted.
Specialized enforcement formations, such as the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement (IPRE), play a pivotal role in protecting consumers from substandard and counterfeit products that endanger health, safety, and economic stability.
The Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement has significantly boosted anti-counterfeiting efforts in Pakistan, increasing seizures from 83 to 110 in the first half of the current financial year, valued at more than Rs 500 million. The seized goods include luxury products, consumer electronics, textiles, footwear, optical products and cosmetics. The organisation has also launched extensive awareness campaigns with stakeholders, demonstrating a strong commitment to combating IP infringement.
Through sustained vigilance and institutional commitment, Pakistan Customs IPR Enforcement continues to fulfil its vital role in protecting citizens, promoting lawful trade, and contributing to national and global security.
