SECP Approves New Annuity Products for Retirees

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has approved a range of new annuity products designed to strengthen post-retirement income security and stimulate the development of Pakistan’s annuity market.

The newly approved offerings include life-contingent annuities, deferred annuities, annuities with guaranteed payment periods, and hybrid structures that combine fixed guaranteed payouts with lifetime income benefits. These products will be introduced by conventional life insurance companies, Window Takaful operators, and full-fledged Takaful providers, ensuring availability across both conventional and Shariah-compliant segments of the insurance industry. Additional insurers are expected to introduce comparable products in the near future.

According to the SECP, Pakistan’s retirement savings framework has historically concentrated on the accumulation of funds during an individual’s working life, while providing limited mechanisms for converting those savings into a stable stream of income after retirement. This structural gap has heightened financial vulnerabilities for retirees, particularly in light of increasing life expectancy and sustained inflationary pressures.

Under the new framework, life-contingent annuities will provide income for the annuitant’s lifetime; deferred annuities will commence payments after a specified deferment period; annuities with guaranteed payments will ensure fixed payouts for a predetermined duration; and hybrid annuities will combine guaranteed income with lifetime payment benefits.

The SECP stated that these products will enable retirees to convert accumulated savings into predictable and consistent income streams, thereby reducing financial uncertainty during retirement.

The regulator further noted that the introduction of diversified annuity products is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s retirement income ecosystem, enhance financial protection for retirees, and contribute to the long-term development of the insurance sector.
