Sindh Enforces Early Closures for Businesses Provincewide

The Government of Sindh has enforced revised operating hours for commercial and hospitality establishments across the province, implementing mandatory early closure requirements as part of a broader austerity and energy conservation framework, with immediate effect.

Pursuant to an official notification, all shops, markets, and shopping malls located outside divisional headquarters are required to cease operations by 8:00 pm. Establishments situated within divisional headquarters are permitted to operate until 9:00 pm. These revised timings are applicable on all days of the week, including weekends.

The directive further imposes specific operational limitations on the hospitality sector. Restaurants and food outlets are authorized to operate between 7:00 pm and 11:30 pm, while takeaway and home delivery services remain exempt from these restrictions. Marriage halls and banquet facilities are permitted to conduct events from 8:00 pm until 12:00 midnight.

Authorities have clarified that essential public services are excluded from the scope of these restrictions to ensure uninterrupted access to basic necessities. Exempt categories include tandoors, milk and dairy outlets, bakeries, medical stores, diagnostic laboratories, clinics, hospitals, and petrol pumps.

The provincial administration has directed commissioners and deputy commissioners to ensure strict enforcement of the revised timings in coordination with the Sindh Police.

This policy initiative is aligned with wider austerity and fuel conservation measures previously announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on March 9, aimed at curbing energy consumption amid anticipated economic pressures linked to ongoing geopolitical developments in the Middle East.

At the federal level, measures included the introduction of a four-day workweek for government offices, an additional weekly holiday, and provisions allowing up to 50% of employees to work remotely. Educational institutions were also directed to remain closed for a two-week period, while banking institutions were exempted and continue to operate under standard schedules.
