Pakistan Seeks World Bank Support for Debt Strategy

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb held a bilateral meeting with Jorge Familiar Calderón, Vice President of the World Bank, on the sidelines of the World Bank–IMF Spring Meetings 2026. The engagement focused on Pakistan’s financing strategy and the need for enhanced cooperation in debt management and capital market development.

During the meeting, Aurangzeb extended his congratulations to Mr. Familiar Calderón on his recent appointment and highlighted the pivotal role of the World Bank Group Treasury in facilitating access to capital markets for developing economies, as well as providing financial innovation and advisory services in debt and risk management.

The Finance Minister outlined Pakistan’s diversified financing framework, emphasizing the utilization of instruments such as Sukuk and ESG-linked financing, alongside efforts to access non-traditional funding sources. He further noted ongoing initiatives aimed at deepening the domestic bond market to strengthen the country’s overall financial infrastructure.

Aurangzeb underscored the importance of institutional capacity building and knowledge transfer, calling for increased technical assistance, advanced analytical capabilities, and specialized training programs for Pakistan’s Debt Management Office to enhance long-term fiscal resilience.

He also informed that the Advisor to the Debt Management Office, Ministry of Finance, would act as the focal point for coordinating future collaborative initiatives with the World Bank Group.
