Government Unclear on Super Tax Removal in FY27 Budget

During proceedings of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance held on Thursday, the federal government refrained from providing a definitive position regarding the possible withdrawal of the Super Tax in the forthcoming fiscal year 2026-27 budget.

Members of the committee questioned Bilal Azhar Kayani on whether the government intended to abolish the Super Tax in the next federal budget; however, no categorical confirmation or rejection was provided during the session.

Kayani acknowledged that Pakistan’s corporate sector continues to operate under a substantial taxation burden and stated that the government remains interested in easing fiscal pressure on businesses and commercial entities.

He further informed the Senate panel that the relevant ministry, in coordination with the Tax Policy Office, is actively engaged in consultations with traders, retailers, and other stakeholders concerning taxation matters and proposals under consideration for the upcoming budget framework.

The committee additionally deliberated on the wider economic implications of the Super Tax, particularly its impact on commercial activity, investment sentiment, and overall business confidence within the country’s economic environment.
