Nepra Removes Approval Hurdle for Small Rooftop Solar

Households and small businesses installing rooftop solar systems of up to 25 kilowatts will no longer require separate approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), after the regulator transferred approval authority for small-scale projects to electricity distribution companies (Discos), The News reported.

Nepra has amended its Solar Regulations 2026, allowing Discos to independently approve grid-connected solar installations with generation capacities of up to 25 kilowatts.

Previously, consumers seeking to connect even smaller rooftop systems to the national grid had to obtain separate clearance from Nepra, creating additional paperwork and delays.

Under the updated framework, applications for systems up to 25 kW will now be handled solely by the relevant Disco, removing the need for separate federal-level regulatory approval.

The change is expected to make rooftop solar adoption easier for households and small businesses by reducing approval times and simplifying the documentation required for grid connections.
